As with many phrases from forgotten lore, the modern term “Book Worm” has evolved with the times and with it the original meaning and origin have – until now – been lost.
Book Worm – used in the modern context to denote bibliophiles and avid readers has evolved from the medieval English term Book Wyrm, which described a breed of dragons found in England, Scotland and Wales circa 1480 which would build its nest-like dwelling from books.
Legend has it that the Book Wyrm could read several novel a week and was particularly fond of Chaucer.
